AT HALF-MAST INTERVIEW
nate is a longtime friend of mine, so when i started this webzine it was an unspoken rule that i would interview him at some point. this interview was conducted the night monday september 14th via instant messenger, and is unedited so what you see is what you get. enjoy...
1. First and foremost, your name, what band you're in, and what you do in the band..aka the typical opening questions:
My name is Nathanael Carney, I yell and sing in At Half-Mast.
2. You just got off the road after being out for quite some time..what do you prefer more, writing a
nd recording or touring and playing out?
I think I personally enjoy myself when on the road, I feel fulfilled moreso than I do when I am at "home," whatever home is for me...the feeling of actually presenting what we have to offer is a time when I oftentimes feel a profound sense of self-actualization...of course I go back and forth on that, it all depends on my outlook on any given day but I'd say overall that's the case. For us writing is usually a fairly drawn-out process, but there have been exceptions to that. I definitely prefer taking our time in that regard, and I'm really, really excited about this next go-round of birthing our collective expressions, bringing those forth into the world. I absolutely love recording, but it can be an emotional rollercoaster.
3. Speaking of writing, you guys have through quite a few lineup changes in the years you have been a band, how do you feel about your band as a whole with your current lineup and how do you feel about your songwriting with this particular lineup? As a newfound frontman, do you still contribute on the musical aspects?
Things have changed in a number of ways since this band started. I think a lot of people in our situation may have tried to find a new identity, be that through a name change or a distinct musical change or intentional member changes, or whatever. When this band started the people in the band had never done anything significant in any band before...none of us really knew what we were doing to be honest. To be able to look back on those days and say, "yea, that was us, At Half-Mast, and here we are today" is something that I wouldn't have any other way. As frustrating as it may be to recall years-old performances, or the way we used to go about things, or listen to certain recordings sometimes, it is also extremely fulfilling...the fact that our band encompasses such a dichotomy...that is, our vast differences from when we started to where we are now...that's something I don't ever want to give up for the sake of "coming off" a certain way or making sure that our presentation to the world is exactly what we want it to be at the time. Our history made us who we are today. Everyone that's been in this band has done something to get us to where we are now-they may have held us back or they may have contributed, or both, but they shaped us nonetheless. That being said I am most certainly extremely confident in the individuals with which I have the privilege of doing this thing, we all played music together 5 years ago and here we are, full-circle, playing in an entirely different context but just knowing each other in a way that is extremely hard to find. It's awesome that I have full faith in the writing abilities of multiple people in this band right now, that's why it's going to be so awesome to be able to have an extended period of time to create with these guys. I don't just identify myself as the vocal expression of this entity...I'm heavily involved in musical ideas, songwriting, planning, lyricwriting...and every other member has the opportunity to contribute whatever they have to offer.
4. So in terms of musical influence right now, what do you personally think you bring to the table? This could be bands right now or lifetime favorites, anything...
Shit man, I don't really ever consciously have anything particular in mind when I write riffs or whatever. I usually am just randomly playing and will hit on something I think sounds good, record it through my shitty phone and play it back so I remember it and then present it to the guys when I have the opportunity...and whatever happens from there, happens. Definitely don't limit myself as far as a certain sound, I don't think. I take something from every musician I listen to...I, like all of us, am a product of what has been put into me. It's really unfortunate that that's the case, but that's humanity I suppose. Maybe some individuals are able to create spontaneously out of the ether, without precedent, but I don't give myself that much credit. If I hear a song or a band and it strikes me as good in general, I'm sure it will influence me. Rock, trance, punk, hardcore, metal, it's all influenced me. Lyrics...I have never considered myself a lyricist. Usually I'll get inspired by a book or something I've read or experienced that I find profound and moving and I'll attempt to put it into words. At least that's how it worked a year and a half, year ago...don't know how it will turn out next time. If this answer pisses you off and you demand that I name bands, I guess I could do that...if you really insist.
5. [Haha] Not at all, all these questions are meant to be pretty open-ended. I will ask for bands right now though, what other hardcore bands currently playing music are really impressing you?
Um...there are a lot of bands out there I haven't really had the chance to explore...A lot of hardcore bands I really enjoyed broke up recently...but as far as playing now
...The Carrier puts on moving performances consistently, an attribute I admire...Legacies...I guess it all depends on how broad you want make hardcore...I am having trouble thinking of bands right now for some reason!
6. Its not a problem, its easy to get caught up and focus more on yourself and your band than to worry about what others are doing. I agree with the carrier wholeheartedly, hard to believe that they arent a fulltime touring band yet still play all over constantly.
Yea, I'm looking forward to doing the full-time thing as soon as possible...
7. Now as a band starting out in the southeast, where hardcore and punk do anything but prevail, do you think that humbles you as well as your band more in comparison to other scenes where hardcore and just an alternative scene in general is more accessible?
I am humbled, and I am so greatful that I had the opportunity to do something in an area where there weren't really any "heroes" to look up to as far as in the music scene in general. I can only hope that it has led to more honest music. Having never been a part of a big city or whatever throughout my life, I think I am able to reflect so much on certain aspects that a lot of times people just think are the norm, or accepted...I don't know. To think that someone invested time and effort to get this band to play our songs in a state I had never been in prior to this band going there to play those songs is a mindblowing concept I don't think I'll ever be able to grasp.
8. It seems hardcore is in a certain trend right now of "fuck God, fuck religion, etc." as a Christian, how do you feel about this? It seems more than ever, Christian or just religious-based hardcore in general is being shit on.
I really don't know what is trendy right now or what isn't to be honest with you. And I don't know if bands with religion as their foundation get shit on or not...if they do, that's a fairly stupid reason to get down on a band. I don't know that the word "Christian" really connotes the life I live or my outlook on things. I was raised that way, and my thoughts and perspectives have continually been shaped and molded as my life has progressed. I have never outright rejected Christianity, but it does not offend me if someone else chooses to do so. I know just as much about what happens when we die as you do, or anyone else does. Is that what religion is founded upon? Preparing for the afterlife? Or is it a way to ensure a rich and fulfilling life in this dimension, right here, right now? That depends on who you ask. The only thing I know is that it will never be resolved by human beings. I really have nothing to say about bands that do found themselves on a concept of God or the people that don't approve of such bands. I fall into neither category.
9. I see. As a seasonal resident of both, which Carolina do you prefer? This can be for any reason..personally I say NC wins purely because of Cookout.....
Haha well, my concept of North Carolina is the Univerity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and my concept of South Carolina is Myrtle Beach, more or less. So it depends on whether I feel like communicating with somewhat intelligent beings [?] that can foster a sense of growth and provoke my thoughts, while at the same time having to put up with the negatives of the college atmosphere such as hours of isolation and 20-somethings that still get giddy over the mention of alcohol, or instead spending time amongst family and friends and playing music but dealing with a typically less than academic learning environment...right now I kinda just want to hang out with my brothers. I love both at times and am discouraged by both at times. Gotta go with South Carolina.
10. Okay now a broader favorite, you've toured and played a good portion of the world. Where is a place you consistently cannot wait to go back to and play again?
Well both times in Europe have been amazing for similar and completely separate reasons, I can't wait to go back. Also, anywhere we haven't been, I want to go there. In this country, Tallahassee is awesome every time, and I love the Midwest and West. Iowa is such a great place to play [at least the two times we have played there] and our first time in Reno, Salt Lake, and Boise blew me away as well.
11. Iowa, huh? Cornfield mosh? Tell me about this 7" you're putting out at some point. Is
a label putting it out?
Cornfields and me go way back. This 7" has been delayed in various stages and it's somewhat frustrating but not as if I expect any different. We recorded it going on 9 months ago, but it took a couple months to be mixed, a couple months to be mastered, and since then we're figuring out if a label's going to do it or if we're going to put it out ourselves eventually, I don't really know. Hopefully I'll know very soon. It's weird to me we haven't put anything out in 14 months, it feels like so much longer, actually...I just don't want this handful of songs we last recorded to not get the exposure I want them to...it would be nice for people to hear them.
12. What else does the future hold for At Half-Mast? Any plans?
Just enjoy what it is we're doing while it lasts and make it mean something to ourselves and maybe someone else. Continue to appreciate the vast experiences and opportunities we have been provided through doing what we love to do. To have my mind opened by people we meet along the way. To share myself with people we meet along the way. To realize that when it's all said and done we're just a bunch of friends and brothers slamming on skins and strings to create a cacophony of what passes for music in some people's minds, and that it's beautiful and the closest I've ever been to living.
13. Any comments on that Hatebreed covers record? Judge cover is bangin'
No, I have no idea about it whatsoever.
14. I'm disappointed in you [haha]. Anything else you want to say? I guess a sort of closing comments sort of deal? Drop some knowledge on me.

OVERLOOKED LABOR DAY WEEKEND TOUR JOURNAL
so my band OVERLOOKED went on a long weekend/minitour this labor day and while i forgot to bring a camera for photo evidence, i did remember to keep a little journal of activities. if it doesnt make sense i apologize in advance. ive been meaning to update this more but ive been busy not doing that, i will have all my promised material soon though, i promise.

DAY 1: SEPTEMBER 5th
got in late last night and hung out. woke up early and practiced, packed, ate, then hit the road. the drive to charlotte is uneventful, as NC is not a very interesting state to drive through. we did bring a megaphone with us and that has proved to be very entertaining so far. getting to the show soon.
DAY 2: SEPTEMBER 6th
show last night was awesome, small crowd but the venue and promoters ruled as well as the bands. played our friends in BATTLE! which was awesome. i fucked up the beginning of the new song but laughed it off and it seemed to go over well anyways. stayed at our friend amanda's house and got a few hours of sleep until she had to kick us out so she could go to work. got up and ate free breakfast at a best western and came back out to discover james locked the keys in the van. triple a rescued us about 45 minutes later and we made our way to greensboro after wasting some time in downtown charlotte. more megaphone harassment ensued and now we are hanging out/resting with our friend kelly in greensboro.
DAY 3: SEPTEMBER 7th
our friends in KILLS AND THRILLS and the band they are on tour with AMBUSH! had an off day yesterday so they ended up jumping on the show and hanging out. while not technically "hardcore" bands or whatever it was still cool to see familiar faces and play to some friends. show was fun, matt watson rules and definitely hooked it up. ended up going back to amanda's house seeing as it was the halfway point for our show tonight. got to sleep in after a late night then went to wal-mart for lunch but i got blatantly followed by a secret shopper but its whatever. driving to columbia now to play with our friends in ROAM ALONE.
DAY 4: SEPTEMBER 8th
show last night ruled. stayed with my friend/ex laura after the show and proceeded to spend our gas money on beer. james threw up everywhere and played goldeneye while i got half-naked and tried to sleep in a hallway. on the way to our last show of the weekend in charleston with CRIME IN STEREO.
DAY 5: SEPTEMBER 9th
so were home now. ran out of (free) demos in columbia and didnt get any merch made so we were far from profitting on this little venture but it was definitely worth it overall. waiting for parker to come back from class so we can unload the equipment and i can go home and sleep!

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
do yourself a favor and go see it. some of tarantino's best work, inspired me to watch grindhouse today. dont go in expecting an action film though, its still very much a tarantino film, so heavy dialogue comes with the territory.

LOWBROW - BROKEN SPEECH 7" REVIEW
today we have the debut 7" from charlotte, nc's own LOWBROW entitled broken speech. this ep clocks in at a little under ten minutes, the perfect length for a 7" honestly. these guys play angry hardcore how it should be - fast.. this band is definitely circle-pit friendly. one of my favorite aspects of this ep is how its heavy but not in a "mosh" sense, but just in how it sounds and vibes, definitely a good thing. the mixing and production is top-notch but not over the top, its dirty when it needs to be but not a unintelligible ball of sound when everything picks up. influences seem to range from everything from black flag to converge to everything in between. unfortunately i can
see this release getting lumped in with bands such as ceremony, but this seems to have a lot more going for it than ceremony has had in years. the guitar work is very solid and holds the band together perfectly for a 4-piece, along with razor-sharp drumming. the subtle and tasteful use of effects is just right for what these guys are going for. all in all, i dont have a single bad thing to say about this record, if youre into fast and angry hardcore punk with something to say, you wont be disappointed. stop by their myspace or the self-aware records page to pick one up because unfortunately these dudes are on hiatus until their guitarist returns from studying abroad. do yourself a favor and check them out when they start playing again.http://www.myspace.com/lowbrownc

OUR CROSS TO BEAR 2009 DEMO REVIEW
OUR CROSS TO BEAR is a hardcore band out of middletown, new york playing early a more modern sounding early-2000's inspired hardcore. one thing right off the bat, the name doesnt do it for me. it would definitely make an awesome album name, but as a band name its not working. but onto the music: the first thing i noticed about this demo is that its well produced and high quality, mixed very well for a demo which is awesome. the vocalist seems to be an angry dude, but sometimes his gruffer yelling approach doesnt quite fit the music. i will give him points for not succumbing to a typical vocal style and for not going for straight "wes-worship," which with this style of hardcore would be easy to fall into. maybe this is his first time doing
vocals, maybe not, but with a little work he could really bring a lot more to this band, because his vocals are good, they just need some work with this particular project. some of the gang vocals sound a little stale and unnecessary, but they work perfectly in the track "leave mine to me" which is styled a little more like a hardcore punk anthem, it works out awesome (EDIT: "leave mine to me" is a bad religion cover and im a total tool for not realizing that and just thinking it was familiar-sounding for no real reason. LOL@me). my only REAL qualm with this demo is sometimes the guitar leads can go a little overboard. dont get me wrong, they are cool a lot of the time and add to the songs, but i think taking it down a notch would actually up the quality of the songs as a whole.all in all, this is an awesome 3 song demo. if youre into AN or carry on, you would definitely be into this band. with a little work, this band could definitely turn some heads, ill keep my eye on them. check our their myspace and grab the demo at the mediafire link below.

AUGUST 10TH SHOW REVIEW
AUGUST 10TH @ THE BASEMENT in MYRTLE BEACH, SC - HOSTAGE CALM, AT HALF-MAST, WHERE IT ENDS, CONQUER ME, OVERLOOKED
okay so i booked this show as well as played it, so it was definitely a fun/stressful evening all around. the basement is a cool venue, its (surprise) the basement bar-area of a bar called crazy j's sports bar. its a tiny space so every show feels pretty intimate and less venue-like and more house showish.
first up was my band, OVERLOOKED. im not going to sit here and tell you how we played or didnt play or whatever because im biased and know that we are the next KISS so you dont wanna hear me talk about it. no but seriously, this was our first show, kinda sloppy but a lot of fun. we played a suicide file cover and i saw some people moving their lips even i t
hough i wished they would have punched me the in the face and moshed me.
CONQUER ME was next and they are probably the heaviest band in north or south carolina. modern, angry, heavy hardcore that makes you want to fight your children. they opened with a leeway intro and i think i punched a brick wall and didnt feel it because of how the heaviness took over my body. they played a solid set, band needs to put out a demo because kids would eat it up. regardless though, these guys are having fun and always play a solid set.
WHERE IT ENDS played next and from what i recall it was essentially the same set as the night before. i still stick by my claim that their new stuff is worlds better than their older material. they have a new song that slows down and seems like its about to end, then it picks back up into a closed highhat mosh part...so good. supposedly they are doing a split with florida's BATTLE! which should be awesome. keep an eye on this band.
due to being ahead of schedule and some last minute decisions, HOSTAGE CALM from connecticut played next. early 90's inspired melodic hardcore, sort of in the vein of fugazi and dag nasty. they definitely have a cool sound and played a solid but pretty short set. no "grayscale" to many peoples dismay. this band gets tighter everytime i see them it seems like. i bought their LP at this show and it hasnt left my turntable since.
now since we were running ahead and i was feeling nice, DEAD HEROES from alabama who had previously been on tour with AT HALF-MAST jumped on and played a short set. not too familiar with their material but they are loud and heavy. very head-bangable for sure. seems like they have the right idea, check em out.
finally, the one and only local heroes AT HALF-MAST played their return show. these guys went to europe for about 3 weeks, came home for a couple days, then played about 55 shows on a full US...fucking animals. solid mix of old and new to a packed house. awesome set, nate had awesome things to say. people really need to start taking notice of this band, because they are awesome. new 7" coming out soon will blow everyone away who didnt already know.
hopefully some demo reviews coming up soon. send me some stuff.

WELCOME/AUGUST 9TH SHOW REVIEW
so this is the first entry in hopefully a long run of entries that will be known as the seen&heard webzine...this idea started a few years ago and was meant to be in paper form but real life/band life/lazy life took over and made that a less and less realistic task to take on alone. this is me giving this a small shot, if not anything more than a place to hear about shows and whatnot.
i was re-inspired (if you can say that) to venture into this by a long conversation today with nate from at half-mast that was jokingly referred to as an interview multiple times by both of us. hopefully that can take place sometime in the near future, but until then here is my first shot at a show review.
this was a pretty big event, scottie p the promoter had been hyping this one up for quite some time, and with good reason to. a stacked lineup including one of the biggest hardcore bands ever, or at least of the past ten or so years. luckys is a relatively smaller venue as far as venues go so it wasnt hard to pack this one out, even though the amount of paying kids didnt break a hundred (EDIT: im a dirty fucking liar and was corrected, 130 people paid for this. fuck me right?). we came up in a packed car and made sure to get there early to catch our good friends at half-mast who were playing first. anyways, on to the recap...
AT HALF-MAST played first, this was their second to last show of an almost eight week full US tour that took them all over for the second time in the past year. in a word, they were TIGHT, playing together night after night for that long will do that to you. a good mix of the newest material with plenty off of their latest full length. nate has definitely found his niche as a frontman, not just with his stage presence but also with things to say. people need to take note of this band for sure, their new 7" will blow you away.
WHERE IT ENDS was up next, these semi-locals from columbia were on a short weekend and this was day number 2 i believe. new stuff is fucking heavy, this band used to remind me of in this defiance-era strife but they are definitely giving off a disembodied feel now, mixed in with a little later era NYHC. resonate isnt a bad ep, but it seems they have really found their sound and are writing their strongest material yet. anthony (the old drummer) made the switch to bass awhile back and is definitely fitting that part much better. never a bad drummer by any means, but playing a string instrument definitely seems to suit him much better. brandon the latest drummer seemed to fit in perfectly, shame that he will be moving and no longer playing with these guys.
SIGNS OF HOPE was up next. never got into this band and their revolving door lineup, paul is a nice enough guy but the whole played out youth crew thing never did anything for me.
ADVENT was up next, the christian heavy hardcore band featuring ex-BELOVED members from NC. i had never listened to or seen this band prior, so i went into their set expecting nothing and getting blown away. probably some of the best stage presence ive seen in a band in awhile. despite their beliefs they got on stage and did their thing, nothing but respect for this band. very heavy and very loud, a good mix of mosh parts along with experimental parts and the like. hard to pin a good description on these guys that wont give them too much credit or make me seem like im talking out of my ass...check them out, thats all i have to say.
THE CARRIER from boston was up next, and they are easily one of the best bands in hardcore. if you didnt know, they play heavier melodic hardcore with an emotional edge. they opened with a new song that was purely made to bang your fucking head to, and then ran through a slew of songs off the full-length, 7", and even the demo. incredibly tight, kids going nuts diving and singing along...exactly like a hardcore show should be. this is one of the best live bands out right now, even if you cant get into them on recording, do yourself a favor and catch them live.
REIGN SUPREME played second to last, and while i am not really into the music this band makes, they are an extremely tight and good at what they do. very moshy heavy hardcore with pretty overtypical lyrics about unity and love and hate etc etc etc. moshlords were in full effect as expected.
last up was motherfucking SHAI HULUD who i shouldnt have to introduce or even describe at all. this band was incredible, played maybe 2 songs off of misanthropy pure and then a clusterfuck of pretty much their entire catalogue. set your body ablaze made me want to do just that..no words to even describe this band. perfect set.
